Morgan Gibbs-White sparks a mass brawl with his former club Wolves by celebrating in front of visiting fans after Dean Henderson’s penalty shoot-out heroics sent Nottingham Forest into the Carabao Cup semi-finals

  • Dean Henderson saved two penalties to send Forest through to the Carabao Cup semi-finals
  • There were ugly scenes in the finals as players got involved in mass brawls
  • Ex-Wolves midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White celebrated in front of the visiting fans
  • The 22-year-old slipped in front of them and put his fingers to his ears as Forest won
  • Others, including Henderson, repeated the celebration, which angered the opposition

Morgan Gibbs-White had the last laugh against his former club when Nottingham Forest’s penalty shoot-out win over Wolves sparked a huge hand-to-hand struggle just after the final whistle.

Gibbs-White left youth club Wolves to join Forest for £25million last summer and provoked the away fans by edging in front of them and putting his fingers to their ears in celebration as Forest’s victory was sealed.

It brought back memories of Emmanuel Adebayor in 2009, scoring for Manchester City against former club Arsenal before running the length of the field to celebrate at the Gunners’ end.

When Forest goalkeeper Dean Henderson, the hero in the penalty shoot-out with saves from Ruben Neves and Joe Hodge, echoed Gibbs-White’s gesture, it seemed like too much for the Wolves players, as Adama Traore, Matheus Cunha and Toti Gomes all involved disputes that followed.

An FA fee for both clubs seems inevitable.

Video footage captured the moment Gibbs-White and Toti clashed amidst the excitement.

Several stewards were forced to intervene during the ugly scenes – from which even injured Forest star Jesse Lingard – who played no part in the tie – appeared to be aside.

As the Forest fans soaked up the ecstasy of reaching the semi-finals, scuffles broke out across the pitch.

There was an underlying tension throughout the evening and Wolves were furious that they were not awarded a late penalty when Nunes was brought down by Emmanuel Dennis.

It sparked the first brawl of the game, albeit a less dramatic one, and resulted in Podence, Nunes, Aurier and even Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui being booked for their involvement.

But as if Wolves’ heartbreaking quarter-final defeat on penalties wasn’t enough, the wild celebrations were a step too far from the away side.

This was a pivotal game in both teams’ seasons and with tensions running high, Gibbs-White made no attempt to hide any emotion.

Ahead of the week, he exclusively admitted sports mail that he fell in love with football given the lack of minutes at Molineux.

He enjoyed reaching the semi-finals with Forest – which he did – but the explosive scenes overshadowed the thrilling Carabao Cup quarter-finals full of twists and turns before chaos ensued.

Forest meet Manchester United in the semifinals with the first leg set to take place at the City Ground.
