‘We used to shower in our uniforms’: NBA legend Charles Barkley stunned other analysts with a hilarious story from his playing days
Charles Barkley has left his fellow basketball analysts on the air stunned by sensationally claiming he washed his own NBA uniform in the shower between road games.
The NBA legend brought up the hilarious anecdote in the presence of Greg Gumbel, Clark Kellogg and Kenny “The Jet” Smith on Friday’s CBS Sports coverage of the NCAA March Madness Tournament.
The 60-year-old, who also appears twice a week on TNT’s NBA game show, played for the Philadelphia 76ers, the Phoenix Suns and the Houston Rockets during his 16 years in the league between 1984 and 2000 – a very different era of basketball , according to the man himself.
“Congratulations to all the coaches and the guys making all the uniforms,” Barkley said. “To clean those uniforms and all – I’m so old we used to shower in our uniforms.”
Kenny “The Jet” Smith chimed in: “Time out. There’s no era when you did that. you make this up

Charles Barkley, 60, claimed he washed his uniforms after games during his playing days

“Chuck” played for the 76ers, Suns & Rockets between 1984 and 2000 and won an MVP award
“Under no circumstances should you wash your uniform. You’re making this up. No one in their right mind has ever done this.’
However, ‘Sir Charles’ was adamant that his story was true.
“When I first went into the NBA, we flew commercial,” said Barkley, who was drafted by the 76ers as the fifth overall pick of the 1984 draft.
“So when you played the night before and flew out the next morning, when exactly were you going to get your uniform cleaned? You had to wash your uniform yourself.
“When you got to your room after the game, you showered in your uniform, dried it and dropped it on the airliner the next day.”
Clark Kellogg interrupted him and pointed out to “Chuck” that “you can clean your uniform without showering in it”.
Smith agreed with his fellow broadcaster, telling Barkley that “you don’t have to have it on” to wash it.
The latter, also known as “the round hill of rebound”, however, persisted with his story.
“No, but it’s easier this way,” he explained.
In today’s NBA, there are usually several jerseys in a team’s locker room in case it tears or a player gives it away, but all jerseys are washed.
There are even shirts left blank in case of a last minute signing, usually on the day the league closes.
