Network Rail sparks anger over ‘dropping terms like pilotman and banksman in favor of gender-neutral language’
- Network Rail reportedly instructed employees to sign a form acknowledging the new rules
- But staff have hit back, calling the new language “wokery gone mad.”
Network Rail was blown up for “virtue signaling” for allegedly introducing gender-neutral job titles and phrases for its employees.
The railway company reportedly instructed employees to sign a form certifying that they would heed new gender-neutral terms such as “manually controlled level crossing” instead of “manned level crossing”.
But a source told the Sun that the new rules made the company look like a “laughing stock” and described it as a “wokery gone insane”.
Staff were also reportedly told to use gender-neutral terms such as “traffic cop” instead of “banker” and “pilot” instead of “pilot.”
The source told the Sun: “These changes come from a long list of demands concocted by higher authorities to become more visible over time.

“But we look more like a laughing stock. You should stick to service improvement rather than virtue signals. It’s gone crazy.”
Network Rail has been asked for comment and clarification.
