New mafia project in development, Hangar 13 confirmed

Hangar 13 has confirmed that they are working on an “all new mafia project”.

It’s been 20 years since Mafia first burst into the gaming sphere, and to celebrate, a number of Mafia developers got together for a 20th anniversary interview. Aside from reflecting on the series’ history, Hangar 13 General Manager Roman Hladík confirmed that a new mafia project is on the way.

“I am pleased to confirm that we have started work on a brand new mafia project!” said Hladik. “While it’s still a few years to go and we can’t share anything more at the moment, we’re really excited to continue working on this beloved franchise and entertaining our players with new stories.”

Mafia: Definitive Edition’s publisher, 2K, also joined in the celebrations, once again confirming via Twitter that work on the new project has begun.

Aside from Mafia: Definitive Edition, 2016’s Mafia III was the final main installment in the series. Fans have since speculated that Mafia 4 could be on the way, although neither 2K nor Hangar 13 have confirmed if this new project will be the long-awaited Mafia 4.

The mafia games are inspired by historical locations, from the Great Depression to the 1960s. Each game takes place in a fictional setting inspired by real American cities. The gameplay is mostly open world and sees players take on the role of characters involved in organized crime in one way or another.

At the time of writing, there’s no definitive release timeline for the upcoming Mafia project, with Hangar 13 saying the game is still “a few years away”.
