Magpies boss Eddie Howe is looking for a ‘transformational’ signing and the 19-year-old will certainly be highly rated
The midfielder grew up at the Barcelona football school in Buenos Aires, where the Spanish giants primarily sign players.
However, with Newcastle making an offer, Howe could beat Xavi’s side to Varela’s signature and further strengthen his squad.
Varela plays a key role in the Boca Juniors squad, starting in 21 of 26 games last season.
He has made 76 appearances for the Argentine club in total while making two appearances for his country in the Under-20s.
Howe is keen to strengthen his squad over the next month to keep up his bid to secure Champions League football.

The Magpies manager has been candid that he is looking for a “transformational” signing, similar to the takeover of Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.
He said recently: “We would love another transfer like (Bruno Guimaraes) because I thought it was transformational for the team and for the group.
“They are hard players to find, but it is our job to find them and we will endeavor to do so.
“I don’t pretend to watch players, I watch them to sign them. I don’t play it when I’m home alone!’
The Magpies have also been linked with 18-year-old Brazil attacking midfielder Matheus Franca.
Howe has admitted the club are considering “handcuffing themselves” ahead of the summer transfer window by overspending in January.
