NFL Draft 2023: Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud says pundits predict he will be a top-five pick

Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud is drafted for the NFL as pundits predict he will be a top-five pick and bag $35 million in his first contract

Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud signed up for NFL Draft Monday and immediately became a potential top-five pick in the eyes of pundits.

Stroud, a 21-year-old junior, announced on Twitter last day that players can register for the April event. He joins a crowded quarterback class that includes former Heisman winner Bryce Young of Alabama and signal caller Will Levis of Kentucky.

“The process was difficult and the decision one of the hardest I’ve ever had to make,” Stroud said in his statement. “As a child I dreamed of playing football at the highest level and after much prayer I have made the decision that it is time to make those dreams a reality.”

Stroud concluded his statement with a message to Ohio State fans, many of whom were hoping he would return for his senior season: “This isn’t goodbye… Buckeye For Life!”

Assuming Stroud is picked within the top five spots, he will be guaranteed $35 million in his first contract. NFL rookie contracts are dictated by guidelines of the collective bargaining agreement that went into effect in 2011.

And why is Stroud considered a top 5 talent?

After attending Rancho Cucamonga High School in California, Stroud was almost unbeatable at Ohio State, going 21-4 as a starter while throwing for 85 touchdowns, only 12 interceptions and averaging 16 buckeyes records.

He was at his best in the semifinals of the College Football Playoffs against eventual national champions Georgia.

With Stroud’s four touchdowns and 348 passing yards, the Buckeyes came close to upsetting the defending champion and preventing a replay until a late field goal sailed wide and handed Georgia a 42-41 win.

His only blemishes at Ohio State may have been his two losses to rival Michigan, which he addressed after falling to the Wolverines (48-31) on Nov. 26.

“People will say I never won The Game and I get it,” Stroud said after the loss. “People will say I’ve never won a Big Ten championship. I understand. When it comes to it, I just have to eat it.’

ESPN’s Todd McShay currently has Stroud fourth-picked to the Detroit Lions — behind Young at No. 1 to the Chicago Bears but ahead of Levis to the Atlanta Falcons at No. 6 — while Pro Football Focus picked him as the third quarterback and goes up 7th place to the Las Vegas Raiders.

The NFL Draft will take place April 27-29 in Kansas City.
