NICKMERCS explains what needs to change in the Apex Legends ladder

Content creator NICKMERCS recently spoke about what he thinks needs to be done to “save” the ranked battle royale in Apex Legends Season 14.

There were many topics to discuss early on in Apex Legends: Hunted, from the ring customizations and questionable matchmaking system to specific weapon bugs. Perhaps, however, the status of the rankings is at the forefront once again – something NICKMERCS believes will require some major restructuring.

“They have a variety of players in these ranked lobbies, right,” NICKMERCS said during its Sept. 2 stream. “You got like necks and sweetdreams and, you know, gents. Players who are at the top of the game. The best of the game. And then you have the rest of the community too.

“They do not care. Hal don’t care, Sweet don’t care, I don’t care, Gent don’t care. None of these guys care about being top 1 pred, but other than that it’s just your full send, you’re trying to get as many kills as possible.

Compared to more traditional multiplayer ranked experiences like Valorant and Call of Duty, figuring out how to get everyone to “play right” in ranked battle royale modes is arguably a little harder.

Finally, ranked matches in Apex last as long as players are willing and able to play.

Although Respawn Entertainment has previously worked to overhaul its Kill Points system, it seems that the majority of players are still not playing in a productive, sane way in hopes of climbing the rankings.

According to NICKMERCS, the answer is simple: “Are enough incentives for them to give themselves shit.”

“There are so many things you can do,” NICKMERCS said. “You can have a tournament with the best ranked players at the end of each split. Does it do justice to the skill? no It’s going to be about people who have the time to play, right? But if you did, many professionals would definitely take care of it and grind it out.

“A little heirloom might be cool. And on top of that, there are just so many options, man. So many options. Skins, heirlooms, money, tournaments.”

NICKMERCS also mentioned that there should be an in-game leaderboard instead of players relying on third-party tools.

With Apex Legends still arguably still having the best ranked mode in the battle royale genre, as even explained by NICKMERCS himself, it will be interesting to see if Respawn eventually picks up on one of his ideas.
