North is preparing to manufacture parts for Rolls-Royce nuclear reactors: Sunderland, Teesside and Deeside in North Wales have been shortlisted as potential sites
Rolls-Royce has shortlisted Sunderland, Teesside and Deeside in North Wales as potential locations for its first factory, which will supply parts for mini-nuclear reactors.
The engineering giant will select one as the site for a £100m-200m facility which is expected to create more than 200 jobs, The Sunday Telegraph reported.
It’s a big boost to Rolls-Royce’s plans to build around 30 small modular reactors (SMRs), with the first homes within the decade.

Ambitious plans: SMRs are small power plants the size of two football pitches – about a tenth the size of a normal nuclear power plant – with the capacity to power one million homes
SMRs are small stations the size of two football fields – about a tenth the size of a normal nuclear power plant – with the capacity to power one million homes.
Rolls-Royce will build at least three factories producing SMR parts, which division boss Tom Samson said is “an incredible opportunity for a region of the UK”.
He added: “Our power plants will be built in UK factories in the north of England or Wales and will create tens of thousands of long-term, highly qualified jobs and accelerate regional economic growth.”
A source said Teesside, which has the UK’s only operational free port, is looking “promising”.
