NRL coach explains Wallabies World Cup SOS…revealed…

NRL star turned coach Jason Ryles reveals how he received a shocking SOS from Eddie Jones – and the signs the Wallabies boss is working his magic with the World Cup looming

Jason Ryles has revealed he was in the process of “painting my house” when he received an SOS call from Wallabies manager Eddie Jones to take part in the World Cup campaign.

Having worked with Jones during his time at England, the NRL coach, who joined Storm from Melbourne, said the die-hard Wallabies boss is pushing set-pieces to make players better.

The Wallabies will open their World Cup season against Georgia this year without a win in five Tests under Jones.

Ryles conceded there would always be “difficult periods” as players adjusted to Jones’s coaching and playing style, but he insisted the Wallabies would be a better team than they had shown so far.

“What I like is that whether you like it or not, he challenges you every day,” Ryles said of Jones.

“Sometimes sometimes you’re like, ‘Oh, I wonder why he did that,’ but then a few days later you look at it and you’re like, ‘Now I totally get it.'” Again, it’s his Experience and his will and drive to want to get better every day.

“Right now it’s a really old cliché because there’s so much out there, but he really lives it and then he pushes it and expects it from his staff and his players and he has different methods of doing it.” I liked that.

“I know when I worked with him there might have been a couple of difficult moments in the middle at the end, but in the end I’ll be a better coach and that’s plain and simple.” I think that goes for them too Player. “When players play under him, they often become better players.”

Ryles, who joins the Storm next year and is in the box seat to replace coach Craig Bellamy when the latter eventually resigns, will advise Jones on the Wallabies’ attack during the World Cup and “refine” what’s already in place.

“The attack is implemented, so I support Eddie with the attack,” Ryles said.

“He takes the lead and then I basically do a lot of the legwork for him, so it’s basically that simple.”

“The systems are in place and now it’s just a matter of refining and evolving them and making sure we’re improving every session.”

Ryles said he jumped at the chance to return to Jones when his old boss contacted him out of the blue when attacking coach Brad Davis resigned on the eve of the tournament.

“(On) Wednesday a few weeks ago that afternoon he contacted me and then on Sunday I was on a plane here (to France) so it was really quick.”

“It’s a great opportunity and I’m just glad I took it.” They’re great guys, all striving to be better and to win the World Cup. So it’s a great opportunity to be a part of it.

“Actually, I was in the process of renovating my house. I was in the process of painting my house, doing some real work, and then I got a call. What better way to spend the last two months of my little break than with these guys in France chasing a World Cup.”
