NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet apologizes for wearing a Nazi uniform for his 21st birthday

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has apologized for wearing a Nazi uniform to his 21st birthday celebration.

During a special press conference on Thursday, Mr Perrottet, 40, said he was “naive” and regretted the decision to wear the costume in September 2003.

“At this age in my life, I just didn’t understand how serious and painful this uniform is for people, not just in our state … but around the world.”

“I am deeply ashamed of what I have done and sincerely sorry for the hurt and pain this will cause for people across our state, especially members of the Jewish community, Holocaust survivors, veterans and… your families.

“I’m really sorry … I’m not the person I was when I was 21.”

Mr Perrottet said he got a call from a colleague two days ago asking about the costume and wanted “the people of NSW to hear it from me”.

When asked why he hadn’t got on with the costume sooner, Mr Perrottet admitted “maybe I should have”.

“Throughout the many years, there have been times when I’ve thought about speaking out about it,” he said.

“It was a difficult thing and the longer I’ve been in life, the more I’ve felt the pain of it.”
