Original Mafia Free on Steam from September 1st

The original Mafia title will be available for free on Steam starting September 1st. The game, which is based on gangster culture and originally released in 2002, has spawned two sequels, with another reportedly on the way.

While the original Mafia didn’t have the incredible sales of many of its contemporaries, it received critical acclaim, at least on PC. Released just a year after Grand Theft Auto III, the game featured a comparatively busier city that GTA only got closer to after the release of its follow-up games, Vice City and San Andreas. Over time, Mafia has grown into something of a cult classic, with sequels being released every few years.

In 2020, 2K released the definitive editions of the original Mafia as well as Mafia II. These definitive editions include a complete overhaul of the graphics as well as an all-new recording of the voices.

2K will allow players to download and keep the original Mafia from September 1st, but only the original 2002 release and not the final edition. All Mafia titles, except the original, are currently available on Steam before September 1st. This includes both Mafia and Mafia II Definitive Editions as well as Mafia III.
