Overwatch 2 fans slam Medusa Widowmaker skin as ‘pay-to-lose’

Overwatch 2 players are having issues with Widowmaker’s new Medusa skin, calling it “pay-to-lose.”

The Battle for Olympus event in Overwatch 2 ends on January 19th, and so far players have been taking advantage of everything the event has to offer. The heroes enter a free-for-all deathmatch in which the hero with the highest number of kills at the end is declared the champion and a statue of himself is placed in the ruins of Illios.

As part of the event, a number of new skins were made available for players to purchase and earn, including the Medusa skin, which transforms DPS hero Widowmaker into the mythical Gorgon. As reported by CharlieIntel, players have pointed out that the skin has a major flaw.

Streamer Brian “Kephrii” St. Pierre took to Twitter to post his experience with the Widowmaker Medusa skin.

“The new Medusa skin is so loud that it’s actively punishing you for using it,” he explained.

“Not only can you not hear enemy footsteps, you can’t hide either. The enemy team can hear the snakes/hairs on the Medusa skin and pinpoint your location from them.”

The streamer posted a clip of the skin in action, where an enemy player can track it using the sound of the skin’s snakes. From Kephrii’s own perspective, the snakes can be heard loudly, making it difficult to hear the actions of nearby enemies.

The skin, which can only be unlocked by purchasing it through the in-game store, tricked other players into joking, “Pay to lose, the only way it should be.”

However, not everyone agreed with the streamer. Some pointed out that Overwatch 2 games are rarely as quiet as the posted clip and that the snakes are inaudible in the usual noisy chaos. “It’s never that quiet in a real game and I doubt it will be that impactful given the already loud weapons being fired, abilities, voice lines, map sounds, payload sounds, etc.,” said one user.

At the time of writing, Blizzard has not announced if they will be making any changes to the skin.
