Overwatch Lunar New Year’s Event: Everything We Know So Far

The Overwatch Lunar New Year’s event is upon us, starting in February, but not much is known as of now.

If following the same pattern as last year, the event will start on the first Thursday after the New Year. That should land on February 7th. Last year was the year of the dog.

Overwatch hasn’t revealed anything for the new event, but Jeff Kaplan has stated that the Overwatch development team is more focused on hero balance and less on events.

Aside from that, Jeff Kaplan said the team still plans to run the upcoming seasonal events but won’t be focusing on new game modes. They’ll instead focus on existing game modes and just add new skins and the like.

Jeff Kaplan explained the process:

“We’re also in a bit of a ‘heads down’ mode where we’re trying to get a lot of work done. We also had a few people traveling over the Thanksgiving holiday (we’re based in the US) and took advantage of the week to give developers a chance to work on whatever they wanted. The end result was pretty cool. We explored new game modes, new features and new engine technologies. It was all really bumpy, but some of the prototypes will actually become features one day. I guess most of the time we don’t have a big thing to announce or talk about at the moment, so we’re more focused on “getting things done” than anything else.”

So fully expect the February Lunar New Year’s event to come with new skins. 2019 will be the Year of the Pig, so Roadhog will likely be the focus of the event.
