Patrick Mahomes joins the KC Current ownership team with his wife Brittany… The Chiefs quarterback becomes the first active NFL player to own an NWSL team
Patrick Mahomes is set to add a women’s soccer team to his investment portfolio as it was announced he is now co-owner of the National Women’s Soccer League’s KC Current.
He joins his wife, Brittany Mahomes, who co-owned and founded the team when it launched in December 2020.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to join @brittanylynne as part of the @thekccurrent ownership team. You and the Longs have done an incredible job of building a world-class organization and I look forward to joining another championship-caliber club that continues to make history.

“We are so thrilled to make this a family affair and have Patrick join as the owner,” Brittany Mahomes said in an official statement from the club.
“He’s been a huge supporter behind the scenes. His passion for the Current is undeniable and I look forward to having him join us on our continued journey to becoming the best in the NWSL.”
The same statement included comments from Current founders Angie and Chris Long, who said, “Patrick is obviously a one-time athlete and someone who has had an immeasurable impact on the Kansas City community.
“Working with Brittany has been a blessing. We are happy to now also work with Patrick. The Mahomes really are a remarkable family.”
The Current has had a great sophomore season going to the league game
The Current enjoyed great success in their second season in the league, finishing fifth in the league standings and making it to the NWSL championship game, where they lost to the Portland Thorns.
Mahomes is no stranger to investing in sports teams — having previously bought stakes in Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals in 2020 and MLS’s Sporting Kansas City in 2021.
In addition to the current teams, Mahomes joined the ownership group of a budding professional pickleball team alongside professional sports agent Rich Paul and tennis stars Naomi Osaka and Nick Kyrgios.
Mahomes is already invested in Kansas City’s other two sports teams: Sporting KC & the Royals
Mahomes isn’t the only person with connections to the NFL who holds an interest in an NWSL team.
Michael Schofield — a former NFL offensive lineman and husband of American hockey gold medalist Kendall Coyne Schofield — is a part owner of the Chicago Red Stars.
Former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning is an investor in NJ/NY Gotham FC alongside retired WNBA icon Sue Bird and NBA star Kevin Durant.
The Wilf family – owners of the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings – own Orlando Pride and its parent club MLS Orlando City SC.
