Pee Wee Herman star Paul Reubens has died at the age of 70.

The actor, who has been a cult figure since 1977, passed away on Sunday evening after battling cancer privately.

Reubens’ estate announced the sad news online. They wrote on his Instagram page: “Last night we said goodbye to Paul Reubens.”

“An iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults alike with his positivity, moodiness and belief in the importance of kindness.”

“Paul fought cancer bravely and privately for years, with his trademark tenacity and wit.”

Reubens created the popular film Pee-Wee Herman with the late Phil Hartman, which led to a 1981 HBO special and eventually his 1985 film Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure.

This led to his hit television series Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, which ran from 1986 to 1991, along with the 1988 film Big-Top Pee-Wee.

Two-time Daytime Emmy winner Pee-wee almost retired after his 1991 arrest for indecent exposure at an adult movie theater in Florida.

The Blacklist actor brought Herman back for a Broadway revival in 2010.
