A 28-year-old woman was found dead under suspicious circumstances in a west Sydney home when a man was arrested for her alleged murder.

Her death was reported to police after a woman she knew found the body in a unit on Colless Street, Penrith.

The body has not been officially identified, but they believe it is that of a 28-year-old resident at the home.

Her car was found burnt out in bushland 8 miles away near Castlereagh.

Police arrested a 32-year-old man at a home in Cranebrook, western Sydney, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The man was taken to Penrith Police Station where the investigation is continuing.

Specialized forensic police are examining the home and the remains of the vehicle.

“An investigation is underway after the body of a woman was found at a house in western Sydney today,” said the NSW Police spokeswoman.

“Around 4.15pm a woman visited Penrith Police Station and told officers she had found the body of a woman – known to her – in a unit at Colless St, Penrith.

“Officials from the Nepean Police Area Command visited the unit and found the body inside.

“The woman has yet to be formally identified but is believed to be the 28-year-old resident.

“A crime scene has been set up and is being investigated by specialized forensic police.

“Initial investigations indicate another person was in the unit prior to the arrival of the woman who reported the matter.

“The deceased woman’s vehicle was also found burnt out in bushland near Castlereagh off the Post Office Road.

“It has been confiscated and is undergoing forensic examination.

“Despite an intensive search in the area around the vehicle, the driver could not be found.”

Police are encouraging anyone with information that may assist the detectives to come forward and contact Penrith Police Station or Crime Stoppers.
