People in Melbourne are lining up to snag Dyson hair dryers and flights at the Virgin 1 Point Rewards initiative

Bargain hunters queue for hours at Australia’s ‘cheapest store’ to snag Dyson hair dryers, Apple products and flights.
- Virgin’s 1 Point Club opened in Melbourne today
- The 24-hour pop-up store attracted thousands
- Buyers purchased luxury items for one Velocity point
- Matt, 32, was first in line and grabbed a Dyson
Thousands lined up in front of entire city blocks in the early hours to take advantage of the opening of Australia’s cheapest store.
Virgin’s 1 Point Club on Saturday offered Melbourne residents the opportunity to spend a single Velocity rewards point in exchange for hundreds of dollars worth of luxury products.
At the 24-hour Chapel Street pop-up store, delighted shoppers queued for more than four blocks when the opening ribbon was cut and the doors opened.
Matt, 32, was first in line with his dog at 10pm on Friday night after promising his mother he would pick up a $649 Dyson Supersonic HD07 V3 hair dryer.
Within the first four hours, more than 1,000 people came to exchange their reward points for products from well-known brands, including Apple, Bose, Weber and Breville, among others.

Matt said he promised his mum months ago he’d get the hair dryer after she said she wanted one but wasn’t keen on spending that kind of money on the product.
Most other major ticket items had sold out within two hours and by 1pm only one-way economy flights to cities across Australia remained.
Hundreds of people lined up when the doors opened and supplies ran out.
According to Virgin staff, who were on hand to greet the crowd, the most popular items were Dyson.
While the store was supposed to remain open for the full 24 hours, it’s unlikely that will be the case as stocks continue to run out quickly.
The pop-up store opened in celebration of the Velocity 1 Point Rewards initiative, which kicks off Sunday, June 11th.
New 1-point awards are added each week, allowing members to purchase international flights, gadgets and more for just 1 point each.

While the initiative seemed too good to be true, Velocity Frequent Flyer CEO Nick Rohrlach assured bargain hunters up front that there was no catch.
“I expect Saturday to be a scene straight out of the Black Friday sales, with hordes of shoppers trying to snag a Dyson hair dryer or an Apple Watch for as little as 1 Velocity Point.” that you have to see to believe,” said Mr. Rohrlach on Friday.
“Most people I spoke to said the initiative was too good to be true, but I assure you we’re serious about quick rewards, and this initiative is proof of that.”
“We know it’s hard to believe that a member can go on vacation for just 1 Velocity Point or buy a Dyson hair dryer for the equivalent of a $2 purchase at Coles, but that’s the beauty of our 1 Point Rewards initiative and it’s fantastic. ‘To be able to launch it in Melbourne.’
