Pep Guardiola launches an amazing broadside against his Manchester City players

‘We lack fire, I want my fans back’: Pep Guardiola fires an amazing broadside at his Manchester City players and the club’s home fans despite the remarkable comeback win over Tottenham

Pep Guardiola couldn’t hide his anger at Manchester City players and fans despite a rousing comeback against Tottenham – suggesting the club has run out of fire to succeed.

The City manager criticized almost every single member of his squad by name after the 4-2 win and insisted they are a long way from challenging Arsenal for the Premier League title.

The holders were booed at half-time which seemed to anger the 52-year-old and he hinted the club had become complacent with the success.

“Because I play with this lack of passion, this season I can announce that we won’t win anything,” said Guardiola.

‘[We lacked] Courage, passion, fire, will to win from minute one. The same goes for the fans, they are silent for 45 minutes. I want my fans back. The fans have to scream.

“They booed because we lost, but not because we played badly. We played well. We were better. They booed because we lost, but maybe it’s like our team.

“Perhaps they are too comfortable because we have won four Premier Leagues in five years. After we scored a goal, they react, but ch, that’s not the point.

“I don’t recognize my team, you [previously] had the passion and desire to run. Do you think the way we’re playing we’ll be chasing the gap to Arsenal? No way.’

Guardiola’s comments came just 24 hours after he actually praised his stars’ mentality and blamed himself for the poor performances, blaming them on tactical and selection decisions.

“I want a reaction from the whole club – everyone,” he added. “We are a happy flower organization. I don’t want happy flowers. I want to beat Arsenal. Play like this and Arsenal will destroy us.

“We are far from the team we had in previous seasons. Do you think this comeback will happen every time? It will not.

“Today we were lucky. If we want to win something or compete – but bitch, bitch, bitch – no chance of winning anything.

‘There’s something in the clouds that you can’t express, that we just don’t have.’

Antonio Conte, who won at the Etihad Stadium last season, lamented more individual errors – not least from goalkeeper Hugo Lloris – after suffering his third loss in four league games.

“If I have to compare this game with last season, I think we played better today,” said Conte. “The performance was good today. We played with the personality and created a lot of problems. We were really brave to push up.

“We got a bit lucky last season and today we had a huge chance to score 2-2. I don’t know how the game will change then. We deserve a lot more.

“We’re not that lucky because we make a lot of mistakes. Sometimes you have a positive performance but a situation that is not so positive. We have to keep working and believing in it.”
