A conversation about how we age was sparked online after a woman tweeted about Hollywood depictions of people in their 40s.

People expressed shock at the difference between people aged 45 in the 1990s compared to today after a California filmmaker tweeted a photo of the film Father of the Bride 2 wearing ill-fitting suits and pearl necklaces.

Starring Diane Keaton and Steve Martin as the parents of a 22-year-old Annie who gets married and has a baby, the film franchise features the actors playing people in their mid-40s.

Jessica Ellis, who started the conversation, noted that the characters in the sequel, in which Annie (Kimberley Williams-Paisley) is having a baby at the same time as her mother, Nina (Keaton), were 45 years old.

People have been debating the changing face of how a 40-year-old dresses after a Twitter user pointed out that Steve Martin and Diane Keaton played parents in their 40s in the Father of the Bride film series — and was her style very different than that of A 40 year old would dress today

Posting a photo of Keaton and Martin in the film, she said, “One incredible thing that’s changed in 30 years is that in 1995, this is what 45-year-olds should look like.”

She later clarified that she was talking about the characters of Nina and George Banks rather than the actors themselves.

People were quick to react, joking about how unlikely it is to see a 45-year-old dressed like that these days — especially in a Hollywood movie.

One person said: “You wouldn’t style a 45-year-old like that today! They would put someone on a peloton!’

Another person today made a stark comparison to a famous figure in his 40’s – Kim Kardashian.

They pointed out that at 42, Kim is just three years younger than George and Nina Banks in the sequel Father of the Bride.

Some people commented on the thread to say they remember older generations in their 40s dressing this way growing up.

One person said: “Women I grew up with dress like this – beads and little sweaters. It’s like country club meets real estate agent look. I refuse to dress like an old person or have these hairstyles.

Another recalled, “My parents gave me a real pearl necklace in high school because they thought I would dress like this one day?”

While many people saw the funny side of a 45-year-old’s changing face, some were worried the same could happen to them.

One person lamented, “If I’m wearing that much beige at 45, just bury me.”

Another said: “What if I told you that skinny jeans, converse and great t-shirt collections are going to be the new old people wardrobe?”
