The Pasadena doctor charged with the attempted murder of his wife and their two young children by intentionally driving his Tesla off a 250-foot cliff was pictured for the first time today.
Dharmesh A. Patel, 42, is a radiologist at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Pasadena. He is accused of intentionally driving his white Tesla Model Y off a cliff known as Devil’s Side on Monday.
Miraculously, all four family members – Patel, his wife and their children, ages four and seven – survived without serious injury.

The family miraculously survived a 250-foot fall off the freeway onto a cliff known as “Devil’s Side.”

There’s no indication the car was in self-driving mode when it went off the road. The interior of the car remained largely intact despite the enormous fall
Initially, there were questions about whether the car famed for its self-driving technology had gone rogue and accidentally taken the family off the road.
Now some are questioning whether the vehicle, which has airbags next to and in front of the two front seats, really saved them.
On Tuesday, police charged Patel with attempted manslaughter and child molestation, claiming the incident was a failed suicide attempt.
He is still in the San Mateo County Jail today.

Neighbors described Patel and his wife as “the cutest couple” with “the greatest two young children”. He remains in prison today
It is unclear whether his wife and children are still being treated in hospital or have been discharged.
Neighbors told CBS News their shock after learning of the allegations against Patel.
Roger Newmark, who lives several doors down from the family on a leafy street in Pasadena, said, “They are the sweetest couple and they have the most amazing two young children.”
The hospital where Patel works released a statement on Tuesday.
“Providence Holy Cross Medical Center is deeply saddened to learn of a traffic accident involving one of our doctors and his family.
“We are very grateful that there were no serious injuries. We will not respond further as this incident is under investigation.’
Among those commenting on the case was Tesla founder Elon Musk. In response to a tweet about the family’s survival, Musk said, “Good news.”

The Tesla Model Y – the vehicle the family was in – has multiple airbags. There are front airbags, seat-mounted side airbags and curtain airbags, all of which seemed to inflate. Police have yet to confirm if this saved the family

Elon Musk responded to a fan account about the family who survived the crash with “good news.” The fan account said the Tesla saved the Patel family, which has yet to be confirmed
Its fans say the fact that they all survived is a testament to how safe Tesla vehicles are.
Police have yet to complete their investigation into the crash and have yet to confirm why they believe the family survived.
They believe the vehicle took an initial hit, then was flipped around in the air several times before landing upright on its wheels.
“The damage to the vehicle indicates that it struck and then rolled over several times,” said Brian Pottenger, Cal Fire’s Coastside Fire Protection District battalion chief, afterwards.
