Prince Harry has revealed he has only cried once over the death of his mother, Princess Diana.

The Duke of Sussex said he felt he “couldn’t show any emotion” in public after her death in 1997 and he only shed tears at her funeral.

The 38-year-old told ITV’s Tom Bradby he felt “a little guilty” as he greeted the crowd that gathered to pay their respects to his mother outside Kensington Palace.

He made the claim during an interview with Mr Bradby during the commercial blitz for his bombshell memoir Spare, which was leaked ahead of the weekend.

In a clip for the interview, which airs on ITV1 at 9pm tonight, the prince said: “I cried once at the funeral and you know I go into detail [in Spare] about how strange it was and how guilty I actually felt, and I think William felt the same as I walked around the outside of Kensington Palace.

“There were 50,000 bouquets for our mother and we shook hands with people and smiled…

“And the wet hands that we shook, we couldn’t understand why her hands were wet, but it was all the tears that she wiped away.”

He added that everyone knew “where they were or what they were doing the night my mom died.”

“Everyone thought and felt like they knew our mother and the two people closest to her, the two people she loved the most, couldn’t show emotion at that moment,” he said.

Harry often talks about the loss of his mother in his new memoir, which was released in Spain early last week.

In the book, he wrote about how his father, who was then the Prince of Wales, sat him down on a bed before breaking the news.

He said Prince Charles called him “my dear son” before telling him his mother was unlikely to survive the head injuries sustained in the accident in Paris in the early hours of August 31, 1997.

He wrote: “What I remember with amazing clarity is that I didn’t cry. No tear. My father didn’t hug me.’
