Prince Harry memoir: In a series of texts between Kate and Meghan about the bridesmaid’s fitting

Harry has given his first full account of the infamous bridesmaid dress at the heart of ‘Megxit’, claiming Princess Charlotte ‘cried trying it on at home’.

Directly referring to his niece – an invasion of privacy sure to anger his brother William – Harry insists the incident was caused by his sister-in-law Kate, who seemed irritated that Meghan had taken a day to resolve to get in touch with her problem.

The disagreement between the two women, he claims, was further exacerbated by Kate’s refusal to visit Meghan’s tailor at Kensington Palace and the suggestion that a party be thrown for the page boys while his bride-to-be was engaged in an argument with her father , Thomas Merkle.

To begin his final salvo, the prince wrote that four days before their wedding, Meghan received a text message from Kate saying there was a problem with the bridesmaids’ dresses and they needed to be changed.

They were “French couture” and hand-sewn only to measurements – no trying on – so “it didn’t come as a huge shock” that they might not have fitted perfectly, he says.

Harry writes: “Meg did not answer Kate straight away. Yes, she had endless wedding-related messages, but mostly she was dealing with the chaos surrounding her father. So the next morning she texted Kate that our tailor was ready.”

She told her his name was Ajay and he was “at the palace”.

“That wasn’t enough,” Harry continues darkly.

After arranging speaking time later that afternoon, Harry wrote that Kate had complained: “Charlotte’s dress is too big, too long, too baggy. She cried trying it on a house.

Meghan snapped back: “Right and I told you the tailor has been ready since 8am. Here. At KP. Can you have it changed with Charlotte like the other mothers do?’

According to Harry’s version of events, Kate replied, “No, all the dresses need to be remade.” And said she raised the issue with her “own wedding designer,” who agreed.

Harry writes: “Meg asked if Kate knew what was going on. With her father. Kate said she was well aware, but the clothes. And the wedding is in four days!’

“Yes, Kate, I know…” his fiancée retorted sharply.

He also claims that his sister-in-law “had issues with the way Meg planned her wedding. Anything to do with a party for the bellboys? It went back and forth’.

Speaking of his wife, the prince said: “I’m not sure what else to say. If the dress doesn’t fit, please take Charlotte to Ajay’s. He’s been waiting all day.”

“Fine,” Kate reportedly replied.

Harry states that he returned home a short time later, suggesting that he and his ghostwriter got a report of the actual conversation from Meghan to find his fiancée “sobbing on the floor”.

While he says he was “appalled” to see her so upset, he didn’t consider it a disaster as emotions were understandably running high. He told Meghan that “Kate meant no harm”.

He suggests his point was proved when the then-Duchess of Cambridge stopped by with flowers and a card to apologize the next morning.

Harry makes it a point to write that Meghan’s best friend Lindsay was in the kitchen when she showed up, as if to propose that he prove his version of events.

Over the years, there have been different versions of who made whom cry.

It was initially claimed that Meghan made Kate cry, a suggestion that so enraged the Sussexes that they went to war with their press office and demanded that they issue a correction.

When officials refused, saying it would raise further questions about the incident and set a precedent for speaking about private family matters, the couple decreed that it was another example of the palace unwilling to stand up for them.

In fact, it was one of the first issues Meghan addressed in her Oprah interview, and Harry insisted her Netflix docuseries last month showed how the institution was willing to lie to get his protecting brother but not telling the truth for her.

He was back in his interview with Good Morning America today when asked about examples of how the palace has negatively placed Meghan in the spotlight to protect other royals.

Harry told the interviewer: “It’s so petty, but the bridesmaids’ dresses. As I was writing the book we were at version 29 or 30 where my wife allegedly made numerous people in my family cry, which just wasn’t the case. For historical references, the truth must be there, and it must come from me.’

However, sources have continued to hint that Meghan was being difficult and that Kate was walking around with flowers, not to “apologize” but as a “classic” gesture to “keep the peace.”
