Some of Australia’s biggest underworld figures have fled the country over the holidays, putting them conveniently out of police reach.

Alameddine boss Rafat Alameddine and Commancheros President Allan Meehan leave the country as the police try to contain their gangs’ bloody war.

It is understood that Alameddine is traveling with his cousin Hamdi and they planned to build their life in Lebanon where his family is from.

However, Alameddine’s lawyer, Abdul Saddik, dismissed this suggestion, telling the Daily Telegraph his client intended to return to Australia.

Meehan is overseas despite being under a heavy crime prevention order affects his movements in NSW but does not impede overseas or interstate travel.

Another, under close police surveillance, Mohamad ‘Almo’ Alameddine, also packed his bags and headed overseas, with Bali as his first destination.

Almo – who is not related to Rafat Alameddine – is accused by NSW Police of being a senior operative in the Comanchero bike gang, but he is not a patched member.

Unless these men return to Australian shores in the near future, they will join the growing list of criminals living in exile abroad.

They include Masood Zakaria, who fled the country to Malaysia last year.

To escape, he made his way to Western Australia during the lockdown before boarding a fishing boat to Malaysia.

He is believed to have made his way through Asia and has since settled in Turkey.

Another exile in Turkey is Duax Ngakuru, the new international commander of the Comancheros.

He took over the reins from Mark Buddle after the longtime president was arrested in Cyprus and extradited to Victoria in August.

Ngakuru, 42, is estimated to be worth more than $100 million.

Buddle is accused of importing more than 160kg of cocaine into Melbourne with an estimated street value of US$40 million.

Bilal Haouchar is also another man that NSW Police are keen to speak to about several murders.

However, Haouchar has settled in Lebanon, which has no official extradition treaty with Australia.

New laws announced in May give police more powers to search convicted drug dealers.

The laws mean police can search them on the street, break down their doors and search their homes, businesses and vehicles at will.

As more and more underworld figures were thrown behind bars and others feared who might speak, many decided to flee the region.
