Patrons at a Melbourne rock ‘n’ roll hangout got a big treat on Wednesday night when Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith gave an impromptu performance.

Just 17 people crowded around the stage at the famous Cherry Bar for an intimate experience with the 61-year-old rocker.

Smith marched onto the stage with no entourage during an open mic night and began playing drums alongside some of Melbourne’s promising local bands.

Cherry Bar owner James Young said the iconic drummer “rolled up his sleeves, lay down and got dirty”.

He performed AC/DC’s “If You Want Blood” and “Up To My Neck”.

Smith joins a long list of prolific entertainers who have also performed at the venue, including Axl Rose, Lady Gaga and the Arctic Monkeys.

Earlier in the day, Smith had spent the day visiting a Drumtek music store in Melbourne.

The night before, the Red Hot Chili Peppers played a sold out concert at Marvel Stadium.

After the performance, several commuters started their own impromptu karaoke concert at the nearby Southern Cross train station.

The band’s hits “Other Side” and “Under the Bridge” were blasted by the crowd on their way home from the concert.

The Red Hot Chilli Peppers will perform their second Melbourne concert at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night after their support act Post Malone took the stage.

Their last concert in Australia during this trek will be in Perth on Sunday.
