Rio Ferdinand has called for tougher punishment for those found guilty of racial abuse, admitting he’s tired of the discussion and the fact that players are being subjected to it.

Ferdinand told BT Sport: “I am disgusted and tired that we have to continue these talks and players are being subjected to this abuse.

“It’s time those running the game impose sanctions to stop those doing it. It doesn’t feel like that’s the case now and people feel like they can get away from it.

“We don’t want to answer any questions from our children about this. We want to answer why he’s so good rather than why they threw a banana.

“It’s a bigger problem than football – it’s also a social problem.”

Ferdinand was quick to back Richarlison after the shocking abuse, before suggesting the hysteria surrounding the event was similar to that following his showboating on the pitch against Nottingham Forest earlier this season.

He was seen throwing kick-ups when he was roughly tackled by a Forest player late in the game as Spurs attempted to close the game.
