Roger Goodell believes the NFL function is at an all-time high despite recent pivotal mistakes

‘I don’t think it’s ever been better’: Roger Goodell believes the NFL feature is at an all-time high despite recent pivotal mistakes plaguing the AFC and NFC championship games

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has claimed serving in the league has never been better.

Goodell made the claim at his annual pre-Super Bowl LVII press conference in Phoenix — his State of the NFL address.

Goodell addressed several other trouble spots — including minority hiring, player health and safety, the Washington Commanders’ investigation and possible sale, future plans to flex “Thursday Night Football” and when the location of Super Bowl LX will be known is given.

On the subject of office, Goodell said mistakes were inevitable but fully supported the teams.

“I don’t think it’s ever been better in the league,” Goodell said. “There are over 42,000 games in a season.

“Several violations can occur in any game. Take that out or extrapolate that. That’s hundreds if not millions of potential fouls.

“And our officers are doing an excellent job of getting them. Are there any mistakes in this regard? Yes, they are not perfect and the office never will be.”

His comments come less than two weeks since controversial calls in both championship games.

The Kansas City Chiefs received a third replay after an official tried and failed to stop the first game due to a clock error. Patrick Mahomes and Co. missed a first down, but converted on the second attempt thanks to a holding penalty.

Officials also erroneously awarded DeVonta Smith a touchdown in the Eagles-49ers NFC Championship game in fourth- and third-place finishes. It should have been deemed incomplete, but San Francisco didn’t question it.

“We may not agree with every broadcaster or acting expert, but we think our officials are doing a great job,” Goodell said.

Responding to recent comments from Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who said the officials disagreement was due to several umpires leaving for network TV roles, Goodell said it wasn’t a factor.

During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on January 17, Rodgers remarked; “Listen, the best referees we’ve had in the league are on TV now. You don’t work in the league office. You are on TV.

“Gene Steratore, my favorite referee of all time… Gene is on TV now. Why? Because they pay more.”

Goodell responded to the observation on Wednesday. “Are we losing people from the field to the stand? There are some who have never officiated on the NFL field and that’s why we haven’t lost anyone,” he said.

“We may have lost them from our office, but we didn’t lose them when they officiated on the field. Others assume this responsibility at the end of their careers. So I don’t think that’s a factor at all. Zero.’
