Roy Keane is opening up about a horrific first date with his wife Theresa after more than 25 years of marriage

Roy Keane has opened up about the terrifying first date he had with Theresa Doyle, his wife of more than two and a half decades.

The couple has been married since 1997 and together have five children and two grandchildren.

But it all started with a disastrous 15-minute date when the Ireland international was at Nottingham Forest in the early 1990s before joining Man United, where he became captain.

On The Tommy Tiernan Show, Keane, now 51, opened up about his love life three decades ago, when he wasn’t interested in “chasing women”.

He admitted his first time with Theresa didn’t go well because he made the rookie mistake of not planning what they would do together after picking her up at Nottingham Forest stadium.

Keane said: “It went very badly. We met, I picked her up at City Ground in Forest and we went for a spin. I said to her: ‘Would you like to go to the cinema?’ Because at least with the pictures you can only watch the movie, you don’t have to chat much, and she said no!

‘ She said, ‘No, I was there with my friends last night.’ And I said, “Well, there are other movies on.”

“I said, ‘Would you like to go for a drink’ and she said no … I literally walked back to the car, it was all within 10, 15 minutes and she said, ‘What are you doing?’

‘I said, ‘Well, you don’t want to go for a drink, you don’t want to go to the movies, what else can we do?’

‘And she got out [of the car], I said, “Maybe we’ll see you next week?” She said, “I don’t think so,” and slammed the door.

“That was our first date and we’re still married!”

The former Man United captain-turned-pundit has previously been coy about his personal life

It’s unknown how Keane managed to turn around such an acrimonious end to their first date, but they have now been married for more than 25 years after tying the knot at Manchester United.

The football pundit has previously been low-key on his personal life, even jokingly excising her from a birthday tribute posted to Instagram in December 2021.

Their children are Shannon, Caragh, Aidan, Leah and Alanna while they also have a granddaughter and grandson.
