Rush hour traffic chaos: The M5 is closed in both directions as two cars ‘collision badly’ leaving drivers stuck in a three mile tailback

  • One person is said to have sustained injuries

Motorists on the M5 face huge queues and delays as the M5 closes in both directions due to a ‘major collision’ between two cars.

Originally reported as an accident in the Somerset area, the incident is now classified as serious with one person injured.

Since 6 a.m. this morning, all vehicles have come to a standstill, causing five kilometers of traffic jams and delays of around 30 minutes.

It is expected that the motorway between junction 26 to Wellington and junction 27 to Tiverton will be closed for some time and emergency services will be on scene.

Devon and Cornwall Police have advised motorists to avoid the M5 or postpone their journey if possible.

A spokesman said: “Police were called at around 5.30am to receive reports of a serious two-vehicle collision on the northbound M5 between junctions 26 and 27.”

“One person has reportedly been injured and the road remains closed while rescue workers remain at the scene.”

“There is currently a full closure of the M5 in both directions at the scene of the accident. “Freeways are helping to set up diversions and traffic within the closure will be assisted in shifting where possible.”
