Scott McTominay is now the top scorer in Euro 2024 qualifying after scoring his sixth goal in five games to take Scotland to the top of glory.
Thanks to a comfortable 3-0 win in Cyprus, Steve Clarke’s side are now just two points away from officially confirming their place in next year’s tournament.
And they were once again powered to their fifth successive win by midfielder McTominay, whose international exploits provide a stark contrast to his club woes.
In fact, he has found himself firmly in the rankings under Erik ten Hag at Manchester United and was even expected to leave Old Trafford this summer.
Instead, he appeared to channel the lingering frustration into another great performance from his country that led to an early breakthrough.

Just six minutes from time, Andy Robertson’s cross was whistled on by John McGinn, with McTominay fighting bravely for the ball and nodding the ball.
With his head firmly in the firing line, McTominay took his qualifying tally to six goals, drawing level with Denmark’s Rasmus Hojlund and Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku.
Remarkably, the likes of Harry Kane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe all lag behind McTominay, who appears reborn on the biggest stages.
A draw between Norway and Georgia next Tuesday would ensure Scotland’s qualification, meaning their progression to Germany is now all but assured.
Clarke’s side were dominant on their way to extending their impressive 100 per cent record, with Ryan Porteous and McGinn also both scoring in the first half.

McTominay has insisted Steve Clarke’s side will stay grounded and limit their celebrations
McTominay, 26, scored against Cyprus and Spain in March and then added to his own goalscoring tally by also scoring against Georgia in June.
“We have to keep it under control,” he said after the game.
“We know that in the dressing room we have we are all really good players. “We have a really good squad that is also full of great characters.
“John McGinn is the main suspect because he is a great character, keeps the group together and always wants us to push and keep going.”
“So I feel like it’s relatively easy for us.” “We just have to stay grounded and keep trying to win games and not concede goals.”
