Screenwriter, playwright and producer Nathan Louis Jackson has died at the age of 44.

Jackson, whose screenwriters include the Marvel show Luke Cage and drama series Shameless, passed away on August 22, 2023 at his home in Lenexa, Kansas, according to his wife Megan Mascorro-Jackson The Hollywood Reporter.

Jackson suffered from heart problems and had an aortic dissection in 2019, his wife told the outlet. His family has decided not to have an autopsy performed to determine the cause of death.

Jackson wrote two episodes of Luke Cage, starring Mike Colter as the titular superhero, that ran from 2016 to 2018. He also served as co-producer and executive story editor on the series.

Jackson has received numerous awards as a playwright and his works include “Broke-ology” and “When I Come to Die”.

Of Luke Cage, he previously told The Kansas City Star, “The show makes a broader statement about African American men and how we see them.”

A native of Kansas City, Kansas, Jackson received an MFA in playwriting from the Julliard School.
