Shania Twain opens up about being sexually abused by her stepfather

Shania Twain detailed the horrific childhood sexual abuse at the hands of her stepfather in an emotional interview on the Today Show in New York City on Thursday.
The 57-year-old singer You’re Still The One, who is promoting her album Queen Of Me, first claimed she was molested by her stepfather Jerry Twain in 2018.
On the show, Shania spoke to Hoda Kotb about how she felt embarrassed for her body when she was a child when she was petted by her stepfather.
Now the legendary singer says she tries to hug her body, which is why she posed nude for the album cover. “I’m my boss,” she said.
Shania did not know her biological father. Her stepfather, Jerry, and her mother, Sharon, died in a car accident in 1987.

When asked what the album title meant to her, the That Don’t Impress Me Much singer said: “It means taking responsibility, taking responsibility for yourself.”
While sitting down, she also said that she chose nude photography for her album cover to deal with the horrible things her stepfather did to her as a child.
“It’s really about saying that I was abused as a child,” she said. “My stepfather used to pat my top and make me go shirtless and I was already an adult. This eerie, horrible need to escape from being in my own skin.’

“I did a whole shoot as part of the album artwork where I’m completely naked and it was really scary, but it was kind of like, you know, I don’t really love my body.
“I don’t like looking at myself in the mirror with the lights on, or looking at my body in the mirror at all. So I said listen, I’m gonna face this fear.
Shania explained that she wanted to “put fashion aside” so that she could be her full authentic self.

The singer revealed the abuse began when she was around 10 years old.
She explained: “I feel like the sexual abuse goes hand-in-hand with the physical and psychological abuse when it comes to someone you know. I’ve learned to hide it.
“Abusers need to manipulate you, before or after, and what I said to myself was, ‘Okay, there’s something wrong with this person and this person isn’t okay.’
