Major supermarket chain Woolworths is closing the majority of its 300 in-store butchers, leaving 489 workers unemployed.

It has been found that shoppers are turning to pre-packaged meat, with in-store butcher sales accounting for just 4 percent of meat sales.

Around 250 of the shops will be closed by the end of March, 420 butchers and 69 skilled workers will become unemployed.

Woolworths offers transfer to a different role within the stores, or if workers are not interested in returning, they can access free post-employment assistance.
