Socceroo Craig Goodwin reveals a question he refused to answer while filming the A-League promotional video

Socceroos hero Craig Goodwin reveals the loaded question he refused to answer while filming a promotional video for the A-League – after branding the big final decision a farce
- The Socceroos star has reiterated his disappointment at Sydney hosting the grand final
- Is pursuing a deal worth at least $10 million with the A-League and Destination NSW
- Goodwin believes the cash grab is not fair to fans – or players who are not based in Sydney
He was a hero for the Socceroos in Qatar – and Craig Goodwin’s shares are set to rise again among football fans after repeating his disappointment with Sydney, which is hosting the next three A-League finals.
Goodwin, 30, spoke ahead of Adelaide’s away game against Wellington on Saturday – and revealed the question he declined to answer while filming a promotional video following the announcement by Australian Professional League boss Danny Townsend on Monday.
“They asked me why I support the APL and DNSW (Destination NSW) initiative,” he told Channel 10.
“I refused to answer as I don’t support it.
“I’ve expressed my opinion on social media, I don’t think it was in the best interest of the fans.”

Craig Goodwin’s stock is set to rise again with football fans after he reiterated his disappointment that Sydney is hosting the next three major A-League finals

A major A-League final between two interstate teams would struggle to attract a large crowd in Sydney (pictured Western United’s Lachlan Wales and Melbourne City’s Marco Tilio).
Despite the outpouring of criticism from fans and players, Townsend called the decision to move the men’s and women’s A-League grand final to Harbor City by 2025 as “right for the game”.
“We’re a game that needs to innovate, we need to make bold decisions, and our game has longed for a moment where we have stakeholders across the country looking to invest in it,” he said.
“In this case the NSW Government wanted to stand behind our game and put our grand final on the national sporting calendar.
“Change is hard but we had to go and do what we thought was right for the game.”
Goodwin went on to explain that the atmosphere in Sydney would be different if his Reds faced Melbourne Victory in a grand final.
“Both clubs would have some fans who would travel but then you would also have neutrals (local) who don’t develop the same passion,” he said.

Earlier this week broadcaster Lucy Zelic blasted the A-League, saying they had “sold their soul” by taking $10m from the NSW government

“For me, the passion sparked at previous major finals is the only thing football in Australia has about other codes.
“They (fans) always make it a (quality) spectacle with their intensity, that was also evident on the live sides during the World Cup.
“But the decision has been made, time will tell how things will continue.”
Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory supporters are furious with this week’s development – and plan to walk out of this weekend’s derby at AAMI Park in protest.
Victory chairman Anthony Di Pietro also resigned as director of the APL this week following the announcement of the grand final in Sydney.
Sydney FC’s main supporters group The Cove have announced they will not attend Saturday’s game against the Central Coast Mariners while their rival fans in Gosford on the NSW central coast plan to host the finals series games for the next three Boycott seasons.
Brisbane fans have also pledged to protest on December 23 when they host Western Sydney Wanderers at Redcliffe’s Kayo Stadium.
