A man is under police guard in western Sydney following the suspected death of his mother in connection with domestic violence.

NSW Police went to a house in Greendale, near Liverpool, around 9.30pm on Friday and found the woman inside dead.

The woman’s son, who is believed to be in his 70s, was arrested at a gas station in West Ballina – more than a seven-hour drive away – in the early hours of Saturday.

The 41-year-old man was taken to Lismore Base Hospital for a check-up and remains under police guard.

The woman has yet to be formally identified.

Investigators are still investigating.
