Joe Jonas officially filed for divorce from his wife Sophie Turner after four years of marriage, stating in the filing that their relationship was “irretrievably broken.”
The couple lived separately as the 27-year-old actress filmed in the UK while Joe, 34, toured America with his brothers and looked after their two daughters.
As news of their divorce broke, pictures emerged of Sophie enjoying a night out in Birmingham, where she drank £6.50 worth of cocktails and shots.
The Game of Thrones actress beamed in the snaps, a year after she opened up about her desire to move to the UK permanently.
As Joe files for divorce and their marital home in Miami sells for a cool $15 million, we take a look at Sophie’s life in America compared to the UK and the reasons why she may be returning home for good.
British countryside vs good weather
Family first: The actress, who was born in Northampton and grew up near Leamington Spa, said she was desperate to be with her family again (pictured in 2019)
Homesickness: Although Sophie lived in a million-dollar property in Miami, she missed the English countryside and her loved ones
In an interview, Sophie apparently hinted at tensions over where the couple wanted to settle permanently Elle Last year she admitted Joe wasn’t ready to move to England.
The actress, who was born in Northampton and grew up near Leamington Spa, said she was desperate to be back with her family and give her children a similar education to hers.
She told the publication: “I miss England so much.” The people, the attitude, everything. I slowly pull my husband back.
“I really love living in America, but for my mental health I need to be with my friends and family.” And also for my daughter – I would be happy if she received the education and school life that I so fortunately had.
“England would ideally be the final destination, but [Joe] might take some convincing! “My parents’ house is the epitome of the English countryside – horses, sheep, cows…”
Although she missed England, Sophie appreciated life in Miami, which brought with it good weather and the “cherished” waterfront life.
Celebrate in Birmingham with shots worth £6.50 compared to Met Gala invitations
Fun times: Sophie Turner enjoyed a wild night out in England over the weekend while claiming her “partying” had taken a toll on her marriage to Joe Jonas
Other Worlds: The low-key celebration is far from landing a coveted invitation to New York’s Met Gala. Sophie and Joe attended the Met Gala last year
Sophie Turner was partying “carefree” just days before announcing her divorce from husband Joe Jonas, a bar manager who spent the night drinking with her revealed.
The Game of Thrones actress drank £6.50 cocktails and shots at the DropShot bar in Digbeth, Birmingham, on Saturday evening during a wrap party to mark the end of filming for her upcoming ITV series Joan in the city .
The low-key celebration is far from landing a coveted invitation to New York’s Met Gala.
Sophie and Joe attended the Met Gala last year, an event considered the most prestigious and glamorous fashion event in the world and which includes coveted invitations.
At the time, the couple were expecting their second daughter, with Sophie showing off her baby bump in a glamorous black dress.
Glamorous: Sophie spent time in the UK this year filming an ITV drama based on notorious British jewel thief Joan Hannington
Three’s Company: This means that Joe is responsible for raising his two young daughters alone – even while he is on tour with his brothers Nick and Kevin Jonas as The Jonas Brothers
Sophie has been spending time in the UK this year filming an ITV drama based on notorious British jewel thief Joan Hannington.
This means that Joe is responsible for raising his two young daughters alone – even while he is on tour with his brothers Nick and Kevin Jonas as The Jonas Brothers.
Sophie said returning to England was important for her mental health, which she suffered during her rise to fame.
The actress, who made her debut as Sansa Stark in Game Of Thrones, suffered from an eating disorder for a “long time” and had to see a live-in therapist.
She still goes to therapy regularly and said she still has days when she feels stressed and anxious and turns to her family for support.
But Sophie isn’t afraid to move on for roles, and she moved to Atlanta with her eldest daughter Willa, three, in 2021 for the Netflix drama The Staircase.
The actress said she found the move “difficult” because she values stability, so she moved all her belongings to her Atlanta while Joe traveled from city to city and toured with his brothers.
Million dollar homes
Epic: Ring choice aside, the couple’s recent real estate ventures also hint at trouble in paradise, as they sold their incredible Miami mansion for $15 million in August
In December last year, it was revealed that the couple had listed their stunning mansion in Miami’s exclusive Bay Point neighborhood for a whopping $17 million before selling the home for $15 million in August this year.
The sprawling home features 10,414 square feet, six bedrooms, nine bathrooms, numerous living spaces, a chef’s kitchen, a formal dining room and a game room.
They had moved from Los Angeles to Miami in September 2021 when they purchased the waterfront property for $11 million.
They had previously lived in a mansion in celebrity-rich Encino, California. They sold the property for $15.2 million.
Joe and Sophie paid $14.1 million for the residence in Encino’s exclusive Royal Oaks neighborhood.
Described as a contemporary masterpiece, the home offers 15,000 square feet of living space and sits on one hectare of land.
In addition to the nine bedrooms, there are 11 bathrooms and plenty of luxury details.
Home comfort: It wasn’t just nature and family that made Sophie want to move to the UK permanently – she also missed Bisto’s sauce
It wasn’t just the rural surroundings and family that persuaded Sophie to move permanently to the UK.
In her interview with Elle, the Game Of Thrones star admitted that she fills her closet with comforts from home that she buys from the British marketplace.
She said: “I buy things in the British marketplace.” In the States the chocolate is not good, the chips are not good. It’s not the same. I need my Bisto sauce – all the best!’
