A heroic spectator has risked his life to save a man stranded between the tracks at a busy train station in the city.

Just before 10am on Sunday, a man was spotted standing on the platforms at Melbourne’s South Yarra train station, a few stops south-east of the CBD.

CCTV footage showed the barefoot man standing motionless between two train tracks as commuters frantically gestured and shouted at him from the platforms on either side.

A man in a black t-shirt appears to be discussing the situation with a station employee before suddenly jumping off the platform and onto the tracks.

He runs to the man standing between the tracks and pulls him to the platform.

The stranded man appears willingly walking with his rescuer while being held in a loose bear hug.

With encouragement, the barefoot man hops across the tracks and, with the helping hand of the Metro Trains employee, climbs onto the platform.

Even the rescuer gets quickly to safety.

Metro Trains later told Channel Nine that trains approaching the station were stopped after the man was spotted on the tracks.

It is not known if the heroic rescuer knew the trains had been stopped before bravely charging across the tracks.

Metro Trains has been contacted for comment.
