A student pilot had to convince staff to admit him to hospital after crash-landing a plane from more than 1,500 feet before driving himself to the medical facility.
Jake Elven, 27, was having his second flying lesson with a flight instructor over The Oaks, 15km west of Camden in south-west Sydney, when the ultralight plane’s engine failed on Thursday.
The pair fell to the ground in a terrifying free fall and crashed through a tree before Mr. Elven woke up upside down in the bushes.
“It was an interesting feeling, the closer we got to the ground the more I thought, ‘This is going to hurt,'” Mr Elven told Daily Mail Australia.
“I passed out for a while after the massive impact of the first tree, but I remember waking up upside down on the plane and thinking: Wow, I can’t believe I survived that!”

He then filmed the plane wreck (pictured) and said, “And that’s what’s left.”

Emerging disoriented from the wreckage with a broken leg, the student pilot took to social media to share his experiences (pictured his leg injured from the ordeal).
The businessman then emerged disoriented from the wreckage with a broken leg and posted his experience on social media.
“Second flight on an airplane and I was in better shape,” he said as he filmed his face and leg injuries.
He then pointed the camera at the plane wreckage and said, “And that’s what’s left.”
Mr Elven said he drove himself an hour and a half to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital while his instructor was met at the airport by his wife and taken to help.

But when Mr Elven arrived at the hospital he was shocked to find that staff at first didn’t believe he had survived a plane crash.
“And they almost sent me to the psychiatric ward … when I arrive with no shoes, blood coming out everywhere and still covered in dirt and bark,” he said.
“I don’t think anyone believed me until they saw the video haha.
“Luckily I only need surgery on the bad impact points and have a broken leg.”
Mr Elven, who hails from the Hawkesbury area, said he plans to get back in the air once he has recovered and would one day buy his own plane.
