Bengals coach Zac Taylor has revealed the serious conversation he had with fellow Bills Sean McDermott after Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest on Monday night.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Taylor described how he chose to go to the Bills’ sidelines and speak to his fellow coach rather than “play the phone” following the scary ordeal.
“I will not disclose any of the private conversations that Sean and I had except this one,” Taylor said.

Zac Taylor praised how Sean McDermott handled Damar Hamlin’s situation

“When I got there, the first thing he said was: ‘I have to be in the hospital with Damar. I shouldn’t be coaching this game. “
Both sides agreed the game would not be resumed, while the NFL has since said it will not be rescheduled this week before the final (scheduled) week of the regular season.
And while the competition was to impact both sides postseason, Taylor clearly saw where McDermott’s priorities lay at the moment.
“Unprecedented is the word that gets thrown around a lot in this situation because that’s what it is,” he said.

“But in that moment he really showed who he is. That he was only focused on Damar and being there for him, being there for his family in the hospital. And at that point I think everything went in the direction it needed to go and that’s where the right decisions were made.’
Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow also spoke about his own role following Hamlin’s injury, which came in the first quarter after he tackled Cincinnati wide receiver Tee Higgins.
Hamlin got up shortly after the game before appearing unsteady and collapsing onto the turf.
He was revived in the field and taken to hospital by ambulance shortly after, where the team said he was in critical condition later that night.

The Bills said Thursday that Hamlin had shown a “remarkable improvement” over the past 24 hours
Burrow told the media on Wednesday that the Bengals captains met with the Buffalo captains and made it clear they didn’t want to continue playing either.
“First, we wanted to show our support,” says Burrow. “And secondly, no decision had been made about the game at that point and we wanted to go through it and let them know how we were feeling playing the game,” he said.
“Nobody wanted to continue the game in a situation like that,” added Burrow. “I know how everyone in our dressing room would feel if it was one of our lads and I know how we felt and it would be one of their lads. So it was a scary, emotional night.”
Play-by-play announcer Joe Buck said he was told by an NFL official that the game would resume after a five-minute warm-up, which NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent has denied.
With just six days between Week 18 and the start of the NFL’s wildcard round on Jan. 14, it looks questionable if the game is even over.

Joe Burrow spoke to Bill’s captains to offer them “support” during the horrific ordeal
Burrow stands by the bills no matter what decision is made.
“I think whatever Buffalo wants to do would be what we want to do as well,” he said.
“We stand behind them 100 percent and support them in whatever they would do in the future.”
The Bills on Thursday said Hamlin is “neurologically sound” and has shown “notable improvement” over the past 24 hours, with teammate Kaiir Elam saying he is “up and showing further signs of improvement”.
