According to a report by Kurdistan’s Draw Media, at this particular event on December 30, men demanded that women be excluded.

The girl was accompanied by a male friend named A Khanaq, who tried to intervene and take her to safety.

However, according to a report in The National News, he was beaten and stabbed by the crowd.

Sixteen men were arrested by Sulaymaniyah Police in connection with the incident and several knives and swords were also seized from the suspects’ belongings.

The incident comes as female protesters in neighboring Iran continue to rip off their hijabs, cut their hair and fight officers in protest after a young woman died in police custody after being arrested for not wearing a veil.

Just a few days ago, an Iranian woman was sentenced to ten years in prison for “inciting prostitution” after she took off her headscarf during a protest last year.
