Texas first-graders ‘force 6-year-old girl to perform sexual acts and record them on iPad’

A Texas The school district faces intense scrutiny after a six-year-old girl was allegedly forced to perform a sex act on another child while being filmed on one iPad.

The six-year-old first grader was pulled under a table in her classroom and performed the act on another child while a third taped April 19 at South Elementary School in Plainview, Texas.

She hit the boy with a book of poetry to stop him, but it went on “until they let her go,” claimed her older cousin Heather Gonzales.

The little girl sat next to her attackers for the rest of the week before telling her family what had happened – although the school found out two days later, her relatives say.

The elementary school teacher who was in the classroom at the time was put on leave pending the investigation. The youth protection is also investigating the incident.

Gonzales said the family only realized something was wrong when their behavior changed – and have accused Plainview ISD Superintendent HT Sanchez of not doing enough in the aftermath.

“You can tell there’s something wrong with her. So they said, “What’s the matter? What happened?”

At the time, the little girl claimed a boy exposed himself to her while they were standing on their lunch break. But that was just the beginning of the ordeal, Gonzales said.

The first grader told her family that a week earlier, during class, a student had pulled her under a desk and forced her to have sex with him.

This happened while a teacher was in the classroom at the time, Gonzales said. The district says the abuse happened “out of the teacher’s full sight.”

As the abuse took place, another student pulled out an iPad from the school and recorded the alleged sex on it.

The video was found a day later by teachers after catching students reviewing the abuse on the device. The iPad came with a password, so it was taken to IT to unlock it, where they found the “inappropriate content”.

The video allegedly showed the little girl fighting back. Gonzales revealed that her cousin hit the boy with her book of poetry to get him to stop.

She said, “She said she would hit him with the book of poetry.”

When asked at what point the abuse ended, Gonzales said, “She said until they let me go.”

Although the teachers and the district were aware of the situation, Gonzales said her little cousin was forced to sit next to the alleged abuser for another week. She was sitting at a table full of boys in the classroom.

Gonzales added, “So you’re telling me that abuse has been going on for a week and a half and these kids are still sitting at the same desk.

“My cousin still sits at the desk with all the boys and has to see her tormentors every day.”

Raquel Medina, the victim’s aunt, added: “I firmly believe it [the school] should be held accountable.

“We fight for justice. If it were their child, they would want the same thing.”

she said All Lubbock.com: “People take sides, and it’s not about sides, it’s about the welfare of the children. I think as parents we should want the same for every child. My child is safe, your child is safe – they should be safe together.’

According to a statement, the district informed the parents directly affected, but one family was informed three days later because they were said to be unavailable.

Plainview ISD Superintendent HT Sanchez said: “We hope to find some direction forward with them. Definitely for the young people and how we can help them heal and move forward.’

On Friday, over 200 people protested the district’s handling of the abuse. Many came with placards with messages that read, “We will not be silenced.”

Protesters claimed the district should have been more transparent from the moment the video was spotted on the school’s iPad.

They also called for the firing of South Elementary Principal Jennifer Hughey and Superintendent HT Sanchez.

Meanwhile, the victim’s family still hasn’t seen the video – as the district claims there was nothing to see.

Full School District Statement

Dear Plainview Community:

In situations involving minors, the school system must be very careful in providing information. All children and families involved in difficult circumstances have a right to privacy. Understanding that any circumstance can have multiple victims, Mrs. Hughey (South Principal), Mrs. Pardo (Assistant Superintendent) and I visited the parents/guardians of families involved in a recent incident at South Elementary that took place under Child Protective Services stands and law enforcement investigations. I appreciate their willingness to sit down, share their perspectives, voice their concerns, and strive for a good outcome for their children.

Respecting their privacy is paramount and while the investigation is ongoing we are limited in what we can share with the public. However, we feel it is important to share what is allowable as CPS and law enforcement work during the investigation.

On Wednesday, April 19, 2023, an incident involving students occurred in a classroom at South Elementary. This incident occurred out of Teacher’s full view. She worked with another group of students. The incident was recorded by one of the students on a district electronic device.

On Thursday, April 20, 2023, the teacher noticed a group of students who were out at the technology station. The teacher picked up the devices from the students. She noticed that one had been password protected and locked by one of the students. The teacher took the devices to the campus administrator, and the administrator placed a work order for a technician from the technology department on Friday morning to open the device. A technician arrived on Friday to open the device. Inappropriate content was detected when opening the device.

The two parents/guardians of students suspected of being on the video were called. One parent/legal guardian responded and the other could not be contacted as of Monday April 24, 2023. Both parents/guardians have been notified that offending content has been identified on the device and that Child Welfare Services will be notified of the matter.

Child Protection Services was notified by the campus administrator and the mobile device was locked in the Plainview ISD Police Evidence Room. The CPS investigator visited the police chief Monday to begin his investigation. The district commissioner and sergeant watched the video in its entirety to positively identify the students involved Monday as well. This information was shared with the CPS investigator. He pointed out that all information will remain confidential until he can visit the students individually.

The investigator sought the assistance of his manager and arrived on Thursday April 27, 2023. After interviewing each student individually, the investigator shared the results of his investigation with the principal, police chief, police sergeant, assistant superintendent and superintendent on Thursday, April 27, 2023. At that time, the district was entitled to all parents /Notify the legal guardian of each student identified during the investigation that the CPS investigator would be contacting them. At this point, the teacher was also put on leave pending the investigation.

As this matter is still ongoing, this is all we can share. We ask for privacy for the affected families and children. We will continue to fully cooperate with CPS and law enforcement.
