The Australian government is considering a fifth Covid shot through the recommendation of health experts

The federal government is considering giving Australians a fifth Covid vaccination in preparation for the winter – as case numbers have fallen by half over the past month.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunization will soon provide its advice on extending eligibility for another booster vaccination.

Federal Health Secretary Mark Butler told ABC’s 7.30 program that the Albanian government is eagerly awaiting that advice.

“I have made it clear that the advice from ATAGI, the Technical Advisory Group on Immunization, was that we should expect advice from them very early this year on an additional booster dose,” he said.

“ATAGI and the governments are especially thinking about being prepared for the next winter.”

“We need to think about additional communication campaigns to the community about how they are very seriously considering getting these extra boosters and that work is currently underway in government as well.”

Only adults with a severely compromised immune system can currently receive a fifth dose of vaccine.

In Australia, an average of 6500 Covid cases per day were recorded this month.

This is down from the 15,000 infections reported in December.
