‘He was pretty okay but not good enough to win’: Bengals defense fires back at ‘old man’ Tom Brady after quarterback called them ‘pretty tough’…23 loss

The Cincinnati defense got the last laugh after being disrespected ahead of a comeback win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In an episode of his ‘Let’s Go!’ Podcast, Tampa QB Tom Brady made a rather dismissive and backward comment on the Bengals defense before their game early Sunday.

“Great team, great young quarterback,” Brady said, before adding that Cincinnati’s defense is “pretty tough.”

Well, that “pretty tough” defense forced Brady to turn the ball over four times — through two interceptions and two fumbles — allowing QB Joe Burrow and the Bengals offense to make a big comeback, winning 34-23.

From a 17-0 deficit, the Bengals accumulated 34 unanswered points to seal a win over Tampa Bay.

Three of those turnovers resulted in touchdowns — the fourth ended in a punt — and they all came on four straight drives in the second half.

The Bengals used those comments as a chip on their shoulders to motivate them to come back in this game – with CB Eli Apple and DL BJ Hill echoing the comments.

As they pulled off the field, Apple could be heard yelling, “Hey, the future is now old man,” and Hill said to the camera, “Hey, we’re pretty tough on defense — remember that.”

“We gotta get that old man tap dancing, man,” Apple told reporters after the game. When a reporter said Brady was “pretty good” in the first half, Apple replied, “He was okay, but not good enough to win.”

Hill had similar points to make, telling reporters they didn’t need to find motivation. “We just knew we were quite a tough defence, I mean that’s how we played in the first half not to lie to you but we just came out in the second half and played our tails off.”

On the offensive side of the ball, Cincinnati snatched up just 237 yards, but they spent most of the second half in the Tampa Bay half of field.

That couldn’t be clearer than in the final stat lines of the Bengals offense. Burrow completed 70 percent of his passes for four touchdowns and one interception, but only got 200 yards on short field.

Cincinnati will put their 10-4 record on the road to play New England next week on Christmas Eve.
