The family are demanding answers as the 29-year-old father of three dies after being repeatedly tasered by police

A grieving family has demanded answers after a father-of-three died after police hit him with a taser “repeatedly”.

Sali Byberi, 29, died last month after allegedly assaulting a police officer who was called to investigate “a disturbance” at an Essex home.

Body camera footage reviewed by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) shows Mr Byberi “allegedly assaulted an officer” while police were investigating the incident. He was then “incapacitated” by the taser after reportedly resisting arrest.

Now, loved ones of the “family-oriented” and “hardworking” father are seeking answers from authorities as they “try to come to terms with his death”.

Mr Byberi died at around 1.15pm on November 21 at a property on Clock House Way in Braintree after an officer fired a taser at him “several times” for resisting arrest on suspicion of assault.

Two officers had been called to the residence less than two hours earlier to investigate a disturbance.

The circumstances as to why officers were called to the address and Mr Byberi’s involvement in the incident have not yet been shared by police.

According to an IOPC report, body camera footage shows officers speaking to several people before Mr Byberi’s alleged attack.

Officers attempted to arrest Mr Byberi before footage showed him resisting. He was then tasered multiple times by an officer, rendering him “incapacitated” before suddenly feeling unwell.

Although paramedics responded to the scene, Mr Byberi died inside the home.

Today, through her attorneys at Irwin Mitchell, his sister Eli Sokolaj paid tribute to Mr Byberi and demanded an explanation for his “traumatic” death.

Ms Sokolaj said: “We still can’t quite believe what happened and how Sali was taken from us.

“The last few weeks and trying to come to terms with his death and the fact that he will no longer be in our lives, but especially his children’s, have been incredibly traumatic.

“It’s almost impossible to find the words to describe the pain and hurt we’re feeling. We have so many questions and now we at least hope to get some answers.’

Mr Byberi’s partner Leonora Mafra, 31, is now left to raise her three children alone – Akil, eight, Egilson, six, and Fabio, five.

“Sali was such a loving person. He was very family oriented and loved his Leonora and children,” Ms. Sokolaj added.

“He was also hardworking, outgoing and generous, and nothing was ever too much trouble for him. He was always there when people needed help.”

The IOPC has since opened an inquiry into Mr Byberi’s death and offered its “condolences” to his grieving loved ones.

IOPC Director Amanda Rowe said: “Our condolences go out to Mr Byberi’s family and friends. We have contacted them to explain our role and we will keep them informed as our investigation progresses.

“When a person dies following contact with the police, it is important that we conduct a thorough and independent investigation into all the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

“After being notified by the force, IOPC investigators visited the address and took control of a forensic investigation of the crime scene.

“IOPC investigators also participated in police procedures following the incident, where the officers involved presented their accounts.

“We will continue to collect evidence so that we can piece together the events that took place.”

Julietspender, Irwin Mitchell’s attorney supporting the family, said: “While it is only right that a thorough investigation into the incident be conducted, Sali’s loved ones understandably have a number of concerns about the events that occurred on the anniversary of his death to have.

“We are supporting the family now at this distressing time to investigate the circumstances of Sali’s death and give them the answers they deserve.”
