BREAKING NEWS: The father of an American student who went missing in France more than two weeks ago says his son was found alive in SPAIN – and reveals he spoke to the 22-year-old

  • Kenneth DeLand Jr., 22, had not been seen since December 3 when he was seen shopping at a Decathlon store in the town of Montélimar, France
  • His father, Ken DeLand Sr., told CNN Friday he learned his son was alive and said he spoke to him. He did not give any further details
  • Deland, senior at St. John Fisher University in Rochester, New York, completed a semester abroad at the University of Grenoble Alpes this semester

The American student, who went missing more than two weeks ago in Grenoble, France, is alive, his father Ken DeLand Sr says.

Kenneth DeLand Jr. had not been seen since December 3, when he was spotted shopping in the town of Montélimar, some 87 miles from Grenoble, where he had been studying abroad.

His father, Kenny DeLand Sr., was on the phone with CNN on Friday when he suddenly hung up. He then messaged the outlet, telling them he’d spoken to his son.

“He’s alive, that’s all I can say,” DeLand Sr. said, but declined to give further details.

DeLand Sr. described his son to PIX11News as a “good student” who “enjoyed school,” adding that his son’s disappearance is “very puzzling.”

The 22-year-old New York college student disappeared while on a semester abroad in France and was scheduled to graduate with a psychology and privilege degree next May.

DeLand Jr.’s classmates reported him missing on Nov. 29, prompting the investigation, according to a prosecutor’s statement released Monday and available to CNN.

Deland is a senior at St. John Fisher University in Rochester, New York, who his family says studied at the University of Grenoble Alpes, which is 75 miles southeast of Lyon in eastern France.

Vaillant said DeLand Jr. also mentioned that he “wanted to go to Marseille before heading to the United States.”

But DeLand Jr.’s parents previously said they couldn’t understand why their son hadn’t been in touch since Nov. 27, saying it was “not characteristic of Kenny.”

According to prosecutors, DeLand Jr. was scheduled to leave France on December 15.
