The father of murdered Idaho student Maddie Mogen speaks out about the arrest of Bryan Kohberger

The father of murdered University of Idaho student Maddie Mogen said he was relieved when a suspect was arrested but was heartbroken by the details of her death.

Ben Mogen, who had been waiting patiently for weeks for news about the killer of his 21-year-old daughter, had a big smile as he told Good Morning America of the moment an investigator told him they had arrested suspect Bryan Kohberger.

“He said, ‘Ben, this is the moment we’ve been waiting for,'” Mogen recalls.

However, the grieving father said he couldn’t bring himself to read the full police affidavit, which describes how they believed Kohberger killed Maddie and her best friend Kaylee Goncalves, 21, as well as Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin, both 20, killed.

“I just broke down and just cried,” Mogen said of the document. “I could only take so much of that. I still haven’t read the rest.’

While details of the affidavit were being released, an Idaho judge recently sealed a search warrant for Kohberger’s Washington home because it could end the investigation prematurely.

Speaking to GMA, the grieving father also described his daughter as “an angel” who always made him proud.

Along with Mogen, Kaylee’s sister Alivea Goncalves opened up about how the two best friends got everything right when they went out that night before meeting their horrible ends.

“They went out together, took a ride, went to a well-known establishment,” Alivea listed. “You have done everything you would expect your daughter or sister to do in this situation.”

She added that her family and the Mogens are still devastated by the tragedy that claimed the lives of their loved ones on November 13.

“Not only are we left missing them for exactly who they were, but we also wonder who they would become,” Alivea said.

Kohberger, 28, was arrested in the early hours of December 30 at his family’s home in Pennsylvania and was subsequently charged in connection with the four count murders of Idaho students.

Kohberger’s Pullman, Washington, home was searched by police for evidence related to the ongoing investigation.

The alleged killer is from Pennsylvania and is studying criminology at the University of Washington’s Pullman campus, a 15-minute drive from Moscow, Idaho, where the murders took place.

Kohberger has claimed he is innocent while incarcerated in the Latah County Jail in Idaho.

According to an affidavit from the police, Kohberger is said to have staked out his victim’s house twelve times and was even in the house on the morning of the murder.

His DNA was also found on the knife sheath that was left next to one of the victim’s bodies.

The document also shows that Kohberger’s phone pinged a cell tower near his Pullman home that night.

It is then seen leaving the area of his home at 2:47am and driving south through Pullman – which police have confirmed matches the movements of his white Hyundai caught on camera.

His phone then stops reporting to the network, which FBI experts confirm is consistent with the phone being off, in airplane mode, or in an area with no phone coverage.

Court documents show his phone was not active again as of 4:48 a.m. on the south lane of Highway 95 south of Moscow. Police believe the victims were killed between 4am and 4:25am.

The search warrant documents, filed the same day as his arrest, state that “compelling circumstances justify the temporary sealing ordered in this matter.” The information will remain secret until March 1st.

The language used in the court document left some questions about what the “threat to public safety” and the “threat to privacy of witnesses, victims and names of victims’ families in the affidavit” might be.

The documents were filed before Kohberger’s identity was widely reported.

The court documents emerged after a gag order released by the Moscow Police Department last week.

Latah County Magistrate Judge Megan Marshall issued a non-proliferation order Jan. 3 relating to the Kohberger murder case.

“The order prohibits any communication by investigators, law enforcement personnel, attorneys and representatives of prosecutors or defense attorneys regarding this case,” police said in a release.

“As a result of this court order, the Moscow Police Department will no longer communicate with the public or the media in relation to this case.”

Kohberger was charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary, prosecutor Bill Thompson said at the time of the arrest.

Idaho is a death penalty state. Fry defended the lack of information released during the investigation. Delivering more might have alerted the suspect to our progress, he said.

Kohberger’s arrest is the culmination of an investigation that has dragged on for more than a month and has met a barrage of criticism from Moscow police.

Police officers have also been criticized for calling the killings “targeted” but refusing to provide any information to explain why.
