The initiative aims to increase the local population, with 48 blocks for sale in the rural towns of Hughenden, Prairie and Torrens Creek, three hours’ drive from Townsville.

A local council has taken the exceptional measure of auctioning off plots of land for pocket change with blocks of land in Flinders Shire in north Queensland being auctioned with a reserve price of $9 (pictured one of the plots for sale).

There are 48 lots for sale in the suburbs of Hughenden, Prairie and Torrens Creek. They range in size from 809 m2 to 1,303 hectares (shown is one of the plots for sale).
The lots will be auctioned off via an online auction from February 10-13, and the community is hoping they will fetch a sale well in excess of their single-digit amount.
The land is entirely flat with electricity and sewage connections and is close to supermarkets, medical and aged care facilities, three schools, a recreational lake, an early learning center, parks and a community swimming pool.
In addition to the low entry price, Flinders Shire City Council is offering eligible applicants a $5,000 housing benefit.
Flinders Shire Council has a population of 1,521 people and the initiative aims to boost population in the region and boost economic growth.
Mayor Jane McNamara said it would be hard to find a better deal anywhere else in Australia.
“The 48 land blocks for sale offer an incredible opportunity for people to invest in building affordable housing,” said Cr McNamara.
“Whether you are looking to retire and need an affordable base for travel, are a young individual or have a young family looking to own your first home, or are an investor seeking high returns, these properties will suit you.
“The size of the blocks means you can enjoy the wide, open spaces that the region has to offer.
‘Flinders Shire is just a short drive from Charters Towers and Townsville.’
