Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate believes the glitter stripe should replace Brisbane as the main venue for the 2032 Olympics to avoid a staggering multi-billion dollar bill.

The Gold Coast is expected to host six events during the Olympics, but given the huge costs associated with other projects, the area should host more events, according to Tate.

He pointed to the Gabba’s redevelopment, which is now valued at $2.5 billion.

“Look at the gabba. They want to spend $2.5 billion to set up 8,000 additional seats. It just doesn’t make sense if you can’t provide affordable housing,” he said.

“They should only renovate it because this is taxpayers’ money and these are tough times right now, so it’s not the time for a rebuild.

“If you burn dollars left, right and center, people will look at you with contempt.”

Mr Tate believes the Games are too Brisbane-centric and that organizers need to give the Gold Coast more serious consideration.

“I’m saying they have to be respectful of taxpayers’ money. We already have many facilities such as Olympic size swimming pools, hockey fields and BMX to name a few,” said Mr Tate.

“Let’s focus on value for money and legacy for the whole of South East Qld. Eventually it all started as a bid for South East Queensland (Olympic and Paralympic Games).’

Incumbent Prime Minister Steven Miles says Gabbas’ multi-billion dollar facelift will pay off in the long run.

“We are already missing out on attracting international matches and the rebuilding of the stadium will create a world-class stadium and allow us to remain competitive for the AFL and international cricket,” he said.

‘It will also attract domestic and international entertainment events.’
