This is the incredible moment a North Carolina police officer rescued an unconscious driver just moments before his tractor-trailer exploded.

On August 8, Lt. Corey Brooks on another incident when he saw the truck crash into the retaining wall on I-85.

He immediately jumped into action and rushed to the vehicle where he found the driver, Michael Williams, unconscious.

The rescue became a race against time as a line of flames had ignited in front of the scene of the accident.

Bodycam footage shows Lt. Brooks tells the driver, “Hey sir, you need to get out of the truck,” before unbuckling his seatbelt and hoisting him out.

“This truck can leave at any time and I thought, I’m either going to die here with it or I’m going to get it out of here,” Lt. Brooks later WSOC.

When he noticed the driver was unresponsive, Lt. Brooks to unbuckle the driver and pull him out of the cab of the truck

“It took all my strength to get him out of there because I knew it was just me and him.” “We wanted to do it together,” he added.

As he made it out of the cab of the truck, Lt. Brooks asks him for help pulling the driver.

An unknown woman appeared and helped the officer get the driver to the other side of the street.

“I wish I knew who she was, but she was like an angel; “She appeared out of nowhere and helped me get him across the street,” the officer said.

Just seconds after they crossed the two lanes, the truck’s cab caught fire.

The driver eventually regained consciousness when fire and rescue workers arrived at the scene.

During a Salisbury City Council meeting on Tuesday, Lt. Brooks officially recognized for his heroic actions.

“In 25 years, this is probably one of the scariest nights of my career,” the official said during the meeting.

The hero police officer was presented with a bravery award for saving the life of the truck driver.

In presenting the award, Salisbury Police Chief Patrick Smith said: “I am proud to work with Lieutenant Brooks and his act of bravery does not begin to describe the character he represents.”

With more than 24 years of experience in law enforcement, Lt. Brooks received a number of awards for his achievements.

Lieutenant Brooks said Williams contacted him and thanked him for saving his life, saying, “He is a friend I will have for the rest of my life.”
