Mr da Silva Granddaughter Anaina Lemes de Souza told local media this week: “He’s still going strong”.

“We’re not going to do anything this year because some other people in the family are struggling, so we’re not in the mood for the party.”

Ms de Souza said the family owned three houses on the same property.

She lives with her husband and daughter in one; her mother, father and brother live in another; and her grandfather lives alone in the third.

Mr. da Silva was married and had seven children, five of whom are still alive.

Last year he celebrated the occasion during an intimate gathering with the family as they all recovered COVID-19.

The father-of-seven also marked his “121st” with a cake topped with a sign that read “O terror do INSS.”

The news was a joke about his decade-long entitlement to his retirement pension from the INSS, or National Institute of Social Security.

The body, established in 1978 to replace the former National Institute for Social Insurance (INP), is also responsible for collecting contributions for the country’s social security system.
