‘The Sexiest Athlete in the World’ Alica Schmidt reveals how much she earns as a track and field athlete, as the German star admits her huge social media presence allows her to avoid taking a part-time job

  • Alica Schmidt talked about how much she earns from track running
  • She revealed that it is difficult to make a living from athletics alone
  • Schmidt has a large social media presence, which provides her with additional income

German 400m runner Alica Schmidt has spoken out about the surprisingly low salary she receives for taking part in athletics.

The 24-year-old Schmidt, who was named the “sexiest athlete in the world” by Australian magazine Busted Coverage in 2017, has competed for her country at world and European level and made the 4x400m relay squad for the 2020 Olympics, but did not take part in the games.

Despite making it to the top of her sport, Schmidt revealed in a video on TikTok that she barely earns anything from athletics.

“Basically, I have to say that it is not easy for most German athletes to make a living from sport,” she said.

“If we are in the squad, i.e. in the national team, we receive 700 euros from Sporthilfe.”

Schmidt added that some athletes also receive “a small sum” from their clubs every month, but admitted that “most of the time it’s not enough to live on.”

Competing at the highest level is every athlete’s dream, but Schmidt explained that it doesn’t always have financial rewards.

In fact, she claimed that athletes often have to pay extra when participating in competitions “because there are travel and hotel costs that are not always covered.”

Since athletes find it difficult to make a living solely from sport, Schmidt believes that most of her peers have to study part-time or take part-time jobs to make ends meet.

Schmidt’s second source of income is her work on social media; she now has 4.7 million followers on Instagram and another two million on TikTok.

Her posts on these social media platforms allow her to earn extra money, and she has expressed her gratitude for being able to build a fan base that can help her focus on her sports career.

“I’m grateful that I make money from social media and can save myself another part-time job,” she said.

Schmidt didn’t disclose how much money she receives from her social media presence, but she’s clearly someone who has her eyes on the future.

Although she is only 24 years old and appears to have her best years as an athlete ahead of her, Schmidt is also studying media and communications management, putting her in a good position when her track and field career comes to an end.
